5-Axis Waterjet

One powerful piece of machinery in our fully equipped welding and fabrication division is the 5-axis waterjet. This piece of equipment is an exceptional asset to our shop, allowing us to prepare parts for fabrication from a huge variety materials. It’s a great tool to have in our arsenal and allows us to cut quality parts in a fraction of the time it would take to machine them from solid. Let’s look more closely at how this piece of equipment helps our customers enjoy high-quality, cost-effective parts.

What Is a 5-Axis Waterjet Cutter?

A waterjet is an extremely versatile machine that sprays a fine stream of high-pressure water into the material you’re cutting. This cutting method means the stream’s velocity erodes the material and cuts it away. For greater cutting power, abrasives are added to the stream, making it powerful enough to cut materials like steel and titanium.

Our waterjet utilizes 5 axes of movement, with 3-dimensional cutting across the X, Y, and Z planes at angles from 0-90 degrees. It also has a high angular precision of ±1/60 degrees. These state-of-the-art waterjet machine cutting characteristics provide exceptional accuracy.

Waterjet cutting is a great fit for many applications thanks to its versatility. It works on a wide range of materials, from wood and plastic to stainless steel. It’s especially useful for substances where the high temperatures generated from other cutting processes could adversely affect the material such as plasma or laser. Some examples include aluminum and plastic. Waterjet cutting is a cold process that does not create a heat-affected zone making the resulting part easier to machine.
